ArtLexis, DUMBO’s newest gallery, presents, “Toyota vs. Godzilla” by artist D. Dominick Lombardi Now through April 3rd at 10 Jay Street, Suite 404, Brooklyn, NY. Mon through Fridays 11 – 6 p.m.

While visiting Tokyo and Seoul last spring, D. Dominick Lombardi was immediately taken by how differently and how overtly most things were advertised or promoted. Cute figures, cartoony characters and the obvious popularity of the graphic novel for all ages left its lasting impression.

For this new series of Graffoos, which combines the destructive/creative approach of graffiti with a tattoo design esthetic, Lombardi places two characters in a series of situations and settings with the streets, restaurants and homes of Tokyo as its backdrop. With his Urchins (sculptures), which are composed of sand and acrylic medium over an armature of recycled objects, Lombardi expands the commodification of the cute.
