Frederieke Taylor Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition, entitled Drawings from the Other Side, of new works by Raquel Maulwurf. This is Raquel Maulwurf’s debut solo exhibition in New York. Maulwurf is a prominent artist based in the Netherlands and has had solo exhibitions throughout Europe.

This exhibition will include works on paper and mat board, as well as a wall drawing in the project room. Based on historical images of wars and catastrophes, the artist creates striking charcoal drawings of the remnants from these events. Drawing on thicker board allows the artist to brutalize the surface with sharp objects; depicting violence through violence by scratching, the artist is materializing destruction in both subject and process. Also on view will be her drawing, “Into the Trees”, based on the battle of the Hürtgen Forest and titled after Hemingway’s novel (which refers to this battle), “Across the River and Into the Trees”. It will be drawn on four walls to surround the viewer and will portray the stillness of a ravaged landscape juxtaposed with the ghostly remains of one of the fiercest battles between U.S. and German soldiers on German ground during World War II. Making something evocative and beautiful from horrific events, these images, both destructive and monumental, are manipulated in such a way that only the essence of the event remains. The drawings no longer show what we see, but that which we know, making current events tangible, posing the question of why man is so eager to destroy.

While drawings obviously do not incorporate sound, these works seem to amplify silence. Jurrie Poot, Head of the Dept. of Prints and Drawings, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (1986-2006) Raquel Maulwurf was born in Madrid, Spain 1975, and lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She studied at the Art Academy of Arnhem and the SAE International Technology College Amsterdam (multimedia). The artist has had a major solo exhibition with catalog at The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in Holland. Her works have also been included in numerous international group museum exhibitions including Museo del Sannio Rocca dei Rettori, Italy, Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, Belgium, and Lahti Art Museum, Finland. The artist’s works are included in prominent public collections including: the Prefectural Art Museum Nagasaki, Bonnefanten Museum Maastricht, Museum Het Kruithuis Den Bosch, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs The Hague: Embassy Tel Aviv, Consulate-General Miami, Permanent Representation Geneva, Embassy Santiago de Chile, and Erasmus University Rotterdam Art Collection.
