vertexList has the pleasure to present (re)terrain, a three-person exhibition by Daniel Bejar, Rebecca Loyche, and Laura Napier.

(re)terrain examines spaces and places of the heavily urbanized and conflicted world we live in. The exhibition looks at the social production of space as well as the malleable and volatile nature of public space. The works in the exhibition ask us to (re)consider the complex nature of the world we inhabit and the very ground we stand on.

Daniel Bejar reconfigures one of the most familiar representations of New York City- the MTA Subway Map, showing us a city that has completely returned to green space, with all indications and denotations of streets, and subway lines and stations removed. He also presents an arrangement of “blank” service change signs familiar to New York subway riders.

Rebecca Loyche depicts the violent nature of terrain with several large photograms of homemade land-mines and explosive devices. In addition, she delineates the gallery space with blast-kill radiuses of those devices painted directly on the gallery floor- placing the viewer directly in her work.

Laura Napier reshapes public space and the way we move through it with a video projection of an intervention at a busy pedestrian thoroughfare. She also presents a large mural print of the New York Stock Exchange building that blurs the boundary between document and fiction, staged scene and reality.
