Broadway Gallery is pleased to announce the two-person exhibition Space In-Between, which will open on Tuesday, March 17th, and close on Tuesday, March 31st, with a reception for the artists on Thursday, March 19th from 6-8 p.m. This show features the portraiture of two photographers, Clayton Cotterell and Ben Handzo.
Handzo and Cotterell take exceptional interest in the awkward moments between the naïveté of childhood and the challenging foray into young adulthood. Each photographer has chosen a specific ‘structure’ or protagonist to illustrate the subtle nuances indicative of this subject; for Handzo, boy scouts in the forest; for Cotterell, a young artist and skateboarder named Noe.
In an approach both subjective and objective, the portraits in this show both render the two photographers’ personal experiences as viable influences while also portraying a telling document of what it means to be ‘boy’ or ‘teenager.’ Effectively, the delicate color palettes and lyrical sensibilities bring an ethereal quality that mirrors the fleetingness of the time period depicted. These portraits ultimately reflect a little bit of everybody’s personal experience, testing the boundaries of the world around them.
