Matthew Fisher presents Forever Is, an exhibition of four new, large-scale paintings. Against the backdrop of an ever-changing political identity, Fisher’s paintings speak of a romanticized nationalism, one continuously torn between ideology and reality. Colonial soldiers inhabit lush landscapes to defend or pilfer the prospering fruits of a new and promising world. Painted with pristine meticulousness, these highly constructed scenes of static theater ostensibly allow only for a land and a future devoid of imperfection. Yet slyly and subversively, the solemn expressions and wavering eyes of the soldiers, as well as nuances of symbolism strewn throughout the pictorial planes, allude to a hidden diverging narrative.
