WORK is pleased to announce the opening of TRAILS, an exhibition of new work by Brigitte Bouquet. Exploring the patterned textures of clay, TRAILS will include three wall hanging mosaics from Bouquet’s Circles Series and four driftwood sculptures from the artist’s newest series, Walk in the Woods. TRAILS is Bouquet’s first one-person show in New York.
The Circles Series mosaics, each measuring 5’ in diameter, are lush, undulating surfaces teeming with movement. Simultaneously suggestive of a micro and macro perspective, Grassy Patch in Zichen-Zussen-Bolder reads as both topographical survey map or to-scale plot of earth, composed from thousands of textured ceramic shards of grass. Similarly, Frozen River and Watching Waves possess a glacial weightiness beneath luminescent surfaces, suggesting a paused glimpse of the sublimity of erosion.
Bouquet’s newest work, Walk in the Woods, is a series of four driftwood sculptures each blossoming hundreds of tiny ceramic buds. The pieces – Burned Tree, Snowy Tree, Gum Tree and Magnolia Tree – reanimate their foundations, imparting a surreal vitality to the encasement of the gnarled driftwood.
