More then an amusement park, Coney Island is a destination. Theater, boardwalk and beach, the site of a million lights is a stage to a multi-layered community. The artists chosen to present work are either emerging, established or self-taught. Their interpretative work and chosen medium mirrors the diversity of Coney island.

Coney Island was named by Dutch settlers after the rabbit population that once inhabited it. It has a rich and long history which has been widely documented in popular and academic publications, various forms of visual art including performance and film. Several societies are devoted to its unique kind of history. Today it is in the midst of being irreversibly permutated. This exhibition was conceived as a tribute to the eclecticism, democracy and history of this specific area on the New York waterfront.

Andrew Garn, a native New Yorker, grew up visiting Coney Island. He is still haunted by the sound and vision of crazy laughing wax heads. Mr. Garn is the author of numerous publications, his latest, Exit to Tomorrow, was published by Rizzoli in 2007.

Special Event: In conversation Richard Eagan and Philomena Marano founding members of The Coney Island Hysterical Society, Saturday June 13, at 4 pm.
