Capricious Space is proud to present WE BELONG TOGETHER : YALE MFA PHOTOGRAPHY 2009. Participants are George Awde, Dru Donovan, David La Spina, Justin Leonard, Catharine Maloney, Caitlin Price, Colin Smith, Elaine Stocki and Ka-Man Tse. With the artists approaching their work from starkly different backgrounds and points of view, the result is a mélange of subjects and perspectives. The common denominator, however, is a refreshingly fundamental one: the artists’ love of photography. Nine images, one by each artist, will be presented at Capricious Space and three other exhibitions of the class’ work will be shown over the coming months at locations in New Haven, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

About the photographers:

George Awde (b. Boston, MA 1980) Awde’s recent work was made both in the United States, where he was raised, and in Lebanon, where his parents emigrated from to flee civil war. Conceptions of “home” and “family” - the ones we are born into as well as the ones we create- play an important role in his work.

Dru Donovan (b. St. Paul, MN 1981) In black and white, she photographs daily rituals of the body through points of display and performance. In this, Donovan attempts to find the intersection between a reality that exists and an imagined one she creates.

David La Spina (b. Cincinatti, OH 1981) La Spina examines the social and architectural history of Mamoroneck, New York as an allegory for the state of the greater contemporary landscape.

Justin Leonard (b. Miami, FL 1979) Leonard is interested in adopting a condensed working method combining his own visual language with his environment in unanticipated ways.

Catharine Maloney (b. Austin, TX 1982) Fueled in part by desire to construct private obsessions, Maloney’s selected photo is from a series in which she compulsively re-creates a picture of her boyfriend taken last summer. Using other men as surrogates, she attempts to re-live the moment.

Caitlin Price (b. Washington, DC 1980) Inspired by the ideas and themes surrounding boredom, presentation, leisure and vulnerability, Price is currently investigating how these themes manifest in images of women.

Colin Smith (b. Rockford, IL 1980)

Elaine Stocki (b. Winnipeg, Canada 1979) Elaine photographs groups of people in New Haven, CT.

Ka-Man Tse (b. Kowloon, Hong Kong 1981) Moving between moments public and private, observed and imagined, her photographs and videos are a proposition of possibility and intimacy.
