In the viewing room, Marvelli Gallery is pleased to present History Is Written By The Winners, an installation of 40 framed collages by Matthew Craven.

Through painting, drawing, and collage the artist explores both traditional and contemporary processes of re-appropriation and formal manipulation of images. Each picture is individual, meticulously crafted and intimate in scale. By experimenting with these materials and methods the artist creates a, “bizarre narrative that blends influences ranging from Baldessari and Henry Darger, to 80’s cartoon icon Cobra Commander.”

As stated by the artist, “My work transforms traditionally formal decisions—such as the use of color, pattern, and appropriation – into opportunities to create new characters, develop sub-plots, and convey symbolic meaning.”

Matthew Craven lives and work in New York. He is currently working towards a MFA at SVA.
