“The fifty-four contemporary drawings by twenty-nine artists represented in this exhibition prompt insights about fundamental aspects of nature as much as they exemplify what is possible in drawing. White. Black. Gradations of tone. A spectrum of light and color, ranging from brightness to dimness to brightness, marks time from hour to hour day and night. A single object, minute or large. Variations in scale. Clusters, masses. A colony of cells. Constellations in the universe. Systems of order versus disorder. Between emptiness and fullness, degrees of density characterize our perceptions of nature’s phenomena.” - Marilyn Symmes

The Kentler Flatfiles were founded in 1990 as an essential element of the gallery. The Flatfiles, a compendium of artworks by over 140 local, national and international artists, have become an important resource for artists, collectors, curators and the general public by stressing the importance of drawing and work on paper in contemporary art today. The Flatfiles are located behind the gallery and are available for viewing by appointment. Curators are invited to make selections from the Kentler Flatfiles for exhibitions at the gallery on a rotating basis.

THE KENTLER FLATFILES

Kentler also has a Satellite Flatfile located at Proteus Gowanus (543 Union Street / www.proteusgowanus.com), with a focus on artists’ prints.
