“Laughter is more serious than tears.” -Toni Morrison

Since the dawn of civilization, humor has been a universal tool for exposing, explaining and coping with the harsh truths of reality. Humor in art is not just entertaining, it’s necessary, often underscoring the truth better than a good dose of gravitas could ever hope to do. Aristophanes gave us Lysistrata, Shakespeare gave us Puck, and New York has given us Mel Brooks, along with a venerable history of visual artists, including Andy Warhol, Richard Prince, and the Guerrilla Girls.

Hendershot Gallery is pleased to announce its summer exhibition, curated by Cristin Tierney and Heather Dell, entitled Levity. This exhibition brings together a group of New York-based artists who turn bittersweet scenarios and the painfully obvious into hilarious ruminations we can all relate to. Politics, gender, race, the media, and of course art itself, are all fair game. Featuring equal opportunity offenders, such as, Rob Conger, Jennifer Dalton, David Ellis, Johnston Foster, Joanna Malinowska, Dread Scott, Amy Sillman & Jef Scharf and Nicole Tschampel. This exhibition promises to be a much-needed antidote to the current socio-economic malaise.
