The Audio Show

Friedrich Petzel Gallery (535 West 22nd)
535 West 22nd Street, 212-680-9467
Chelsea
July 13 - August 23, 2009
Web Site

Broadcasting within the dimly lit space of 535 Friedrich Petzel Gallery comes a series of audio interventions. A lone room broadcast.

The Audio Show will exhibit in a near empty space compromised solely of audio selections from approximately 30 artists. Audio pieces will be comprised of an array of story telling, field recordings, music, interviews, artworks, elements segregated from installations, whatever each artist cares to broadcast. The gallery will play the segments in a once-a-day eight-hour schedule. Programming will be repeated each day of the exhibition. A list of the artists and time slots will be posted to the side of a small clock to mark the time.

Throughout the day’s programming a reconstructed episode of Walter Benjamin’s 1930s era radio show, commonly known as the “Aufklarung fur Kinder” (enlightenment for children) will play. The organization of this show takes inspiration from Benjamin’s metaphor of ‘the travelers return to those who never left’ with invisible producers, antiquated communication techniques, and instant information exchanges, all within a summer recession.

It is simultaneously a generous and superfluous gesture for those who actually go to galleries in the NYC summer…
