Martos Gallery is pleased to announce a group show featuring works by Sharon Lockhart, Juliana Paciulli and Caecilia Tripp.
The artists’ fascination with music and its various manifestations, modes of expression and effects constitutes the thematic focal point of the exhibition. Yet, even though linked by a common interest, the different pieces show how manifold the individual approaches to and interpretations of music actually are. Featuring photography and video, the exhibition tries to explore the complexity that arises in the depictions of one artistic medium by means of another and emphasizes the dichotomy between different genres. The oppositions of sound and silence, performance and still life, permanence and fleetingness are among the challenging aspects that arise in the dialogue between visual art and music.
Sharon Lockhart’s works are characterized by authenticity and concerned with the fundamentals of human vision and attention. Her deceptively straightforward images cause the viewer to question the assumed objective description of our surroundings and to analyze the subject more profoundly as the case in Untitled, which provides a subtle approach to the art of music and the skills it involves.
Juliana Paciulli’s video is influenced by both autobiographical as well as pop cultural sources. Her intimate portrait of a young girl’s infatuation with Jim Morrison explores the relationship between female desire and rock music while sensitively examining the ineptness to convey feelings via language.
Caecilia Tripp’s filmic works of the last five years deal with the social consequences of creolization processes and focuses on the newly generated voices by giving them a unique visual identity. Her film Boogie Man emblematizes the incarnation of the lost souls and the ones in defense of equity, always accompanied by his music which is as unrelenting as his battle for justice.
