THE ARTIST ASSISTANTS’ GROUP SHOW: Organized by John LaRocca
What do Terence Koh, Jenny Holzer, Tony Oursler, Bill Jensen and Michelangelo have in common? They all had artist assistants. Nightshift III: Back Stage celebrates this sub-community of professional artists (who are not interns) that devote much of their daylight hours working for the established art-world, and spend their evening hours maintaining a disciplined studio practice of their own.
An exhibition dedicated to showcasing the results of these nocturnal efforts, NIGHTSHIFT III: Back Stage pulls back the curtain for an evening.
In addition to the gallery show of painting, sculpture, video and sound installation curated by SARA PRINGLE, the August 18 opening will include a lineup of performances curated by BEN BOATRIGHT and SUMMER GUTHERY, based loosely around ideas of giving and receiving direction and the commonly unseen elements of production. The performances start at 6PM and run through 9PM. There will also be a one night only project room (project room artists to be announced).
