White Box is pleased to present Towing the Line, Drawing Space: 40 Contemporary Dutch Artists, Defining the Moment in Holland opening on Saturday September 19th and on view through October 29th. This exhibition coincides with NY400, celebrating the 400-year sustaining relationship between New York and The Netherlands.
Towing the Line, Drawing Space presents works by 40 contemporary artists who range in age, style and merits from conceptualists of the 1970s to the recent graduates and young emerging artists, many of whom are either residents and are often assiduous travelers to New York City. The works on view are linked through their relation to the medium of drawing in all its expressive capacities. The exhibition includes works on paper, animations, as well as sculptures and site-specific installations. The curators illuminate a reflection of the current emerging Dutch art scene, highlighting the growing presence of contemporary Dutch artists and their affiliations to the New York art world. This exhibition continues the tradition of cross-cultural influences in Dutch art, drawing a lineage from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Mondrian, and De Kooning.
The following artists are participating in the exhibition: Ko Aarts, Wafae Ahalouch el Keriasti, Erik Andriesse, Gijs Assmann, David Bade, Hans Broek, Robbie Cornellissen, Karin van Dam, Rene Daniels, Iris van Dongen, Marcel van Eeden, Sidi El Karchi, Hadassah Emmerich, Iris Frerichs, Lenneke van der Goot, Arjan van Helmond, Rosemin Hendriks, Sharon Houkema, Boukje Janssen, Job Koelewijn, Marijn van Kreij, Juul Kraijer, Arno Kramer, Atelier van Lieshout, Harold Linker, Erik Mattijssen, Bas Meerman, Rik Meijers, Marc Nagtzaam, Serge Onnen, Silvia Russel, Charlotte Schleiffert, Sandro Setola, Roland Sohier, Aam Solleveld, Berend Strik, Koen Vermeule, Henk Visch, and Bas de Wit.
This exhibition offers unparalled insight into a small nation with big universal ideas in trade, culture and art, critically and poignantly revealing how Dutch art continues to transform art trends internationally. The diverse explorations of participating artists are connected through a physically drawn line, translated as towing a line to define space. As several revered and recognizable names are featured alongside new talents, Towing the Line affords a significant opportunity to examine and reflect upon a distinctive and dynamic cultural and artistic heritage. The exhibiting artists portray their unique sensibilities and interests in connecting multiple narratives from the Netherlands to New York City, historically and in the present moment.
