“Where your flames still bite my thigh and my ribs crack where your wheels wind. A woman like that is not ashamed to die. I have been her kind.” Anne Sexton
NYU Steinhardt’s Rosenberg Gallery presents the work of MFA candidate, Andy Slemenda, in Our Kind. Our Kind pursues the relationship of otherness and the larger social community. Slemenda’s work demonstrates that difference is a means of defining something and outcasting it for fear of its impact on the whole, for fear of questioning things most would never wish to question. Fueled by a lifetime struggle with gender, Slemenda creates a world where there exist neither names nor limitations. A disparate collection of animal limbs, country chic decorations, images of metamorphosing bodies, and instruments of torture force the viewer to constantly navigate between persecutor and the persecuted.
