Curated by artist Marshall Reese, this exhibition of recent editioned work is a multivalent look at the currents and crosscurrents shaping our society in the aftermath of September 11th. The exhibition title refers to media theorist Marshall McLuhan’s landmark study (with Quentin Fiore), The Medium is the Message.
The artists in the exhibition are: Yoko Ono, Hans Haacke, Carolee Schneemann, Ligorano/Reese, Muntadas, Jane Hammond, Jim Campbell, Louis Hock, Robert Attanasio, Peggy Diggs, Dread Scott, Peter Scott, Marlene McCarty, Nancy Davenport, Louis Hock, Constantin Boym, Christoph Draeger and Krzysztof Wodiczko.
Much of the work on view incorporates the very same digital processes and tools utilized by the mass media. The exhibition artists, however, create an entirely different set of alternative messages to show how the impact of images and media shapes politics and art today. These works further underscore the necessity and importance of art for understanding and responding to current events.
